Diablo III to use authenticator for real-money auction house

With the real-money auction house for Diablo III less than a day away from launch, it has been reported that using real world funds will involve the use of an authenticator. Details and pricing after the jump!

Due to the massive popularity of Diablo III, there is little wonder as to why Blizzard has gone this route. The game has already seen a fair share of security issues despite the mechanisms currently in place to lessen hacking. If past successes in Blizzard’s repertoire, such as World of WarCraft, have taught us anything, it is that the threat-to-security trend will likely continue.

According to Joystiq, the authenticator will be used to add funds to existing accounts before it may be spent. The authenticator will cost $6.50 in its physical form, but will be made available for free as a mobile application.
